Soi4 puts the
bang back in Bangkok cuisine
Oakland spot takes Thai to new heights
By Kim Severson, Chronicle Staff Writer
Friday, May 4, 2001
Soi means street, and the name was inspired by
a particularly rocking one in Bangkok. The sleek interior is pretty
rocking, itself. With floor-to- ceiling windows in front, small
skylights and a quiet balcony, the room feels spacious and cozy all at
the same time. Deep olive drab and cherry wood provide a modern but
subtle color scheme. A stylish little bar in the back and white
tablecloths give Soi4 sophistication.
The menu takes Bangkok street food and gives it a similarly
sophisticated edge, mixing in other dishes that reflect some of the
broad range of Thai cooking.

The best of
the bay dinning
Soi4 is going to turn the East Bay's idea of
Thai food on its head. Actually, the stylish restaurant on College
Avenue in Oakland already has. Waits on the weekends are common, and
lunch can be packed.
The pad Thai may be ho-hum, but shrimp curry, short ribs in kaffir
panang curry, and the assorted vegetable curries are outstanding.
